Cricketer Lamichhane announces withdrawal of his name from upcoming tournaments

KATHMANDU: Leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane, a key member of Nepal’s National Cricket team, has decided to step back from the upcoming tournament.

His announcement, made on social media, comes as he faces accusations of raping a minor.

In a social medi apost, Lamichhane expressed, “It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to withdraw my name from the upcoming competitions. I am currently going through a difficult and challenging time in my life.”

He cited the need to focus on self-revival and spend time with his family as the driving force behind his decision.

Expressing gratitude for the support he has received, Lamichhane added, “I would like to express my gratitude for all the blessings and good wishes I have received so far. Thank you all.”

The rape case filed against Lamichhane is pending in the Kathmandu District Court, with the latest hearing adjourned.

The alleged incident was reported when a teenage girl accused Lamichhane of sexual harassment, leading to a disruption in his cricketing career.

Nepal is gearing up for a triangular T20 series involving UAE and Hong Kong scheduled to kick off on October 18.

The team, including Sandeep, had previously been announced for this tournament.

Earlier, citing mental health concerns, Sandeep had opted out of the 19th Asian Games.

His decision to forego the event came after meetings with Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) President Chatur Bahadur Chand and Secretary Paras Khadka, before he departed for Hangzhou.
