Uncertainty Surrounds U-19 World Cup hosting amidst suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket

KATHMANDU: The recent suspension of Sri Lankan cricket by the International Cricket Council (ICC) has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the upcoming U-19 Cricket World Cup scheduled for February.

Shammi Silva, the President of Sri Lanka Cricket, has issued a cautionary statement, suggesting that hosting rights for the Youth World Cup, slated to take place in Sri Lanka, could be revoked if the suspension is not lifted.

Sixteen teams, including Nepal, are set to participate in this prestigious World Cup. Nepal finds itself in Group ‘D,’ alongside Pakistan, Afghanistan, and New Zealand.

As reported by the reputable cricket web portal ESPNcricinfo, the ICC has not yet reached a decision regarding the fate of the U-19 World Cup. A formal discussion on the hosting arrangements is anticipated to take place during the ICC board meeting scheduled for November 21.

The suspension of Sri Lankan cricket came in the wake of political interference, a decision made by the ICC on Friday.

The ongoing conflict between officials from Cricket Sri Lanka and Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has persisted for a year, with the minister accusing the cricket board of corruption and disorder. Consequently, the Ministry took the unprecedented step of dismissing Sri Lanka Cricket.
