Jajarkot earthquake: 35,000 families left homeless



JAJARKOT: A devastating earthquake that struck Jajarkot and Rukum West on Friday night has left a staggering 35,000 families without homes.

Reports indicate that 17,792 houses were completely demolished across 13 districts, including Jajarkot and Rukum West, while an additional 17,529 mud houses have been rendered uninhabitable due to extensive structural damage.

As per the latest data gathered by the Disaster Preparedness and Response Branch of the Home Ministry as of Monday night, Rukum West has borne the brunt of the destruction.

A total of 16,570 houses in the district have been reduced to rubble, with an additional 9,961 houses suffering partial damage.

In Jajarkot, 1,170 houses were entirely razed to the ground, while 7,166 houses were left in precarious conditions.

Jajarkot has also recorded the highest human toll, with 157 fatalities and 133 injuries attributed to the earthquake.

In Rukum West, 52 lives were lost, and 197 individuals sustained injuries.

Moreover, the seismic event has had varying impacts on Rukum East, Rolpa, Nawalparasi East, Salyan, Dang, Baitadi, Jumla, Dailekh, Kalikot, Achham and Pyuthan.
