Minister Jwala pledges to promote disabled-friendly infrastructure development



KATHMANDU: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Prakash Jwala, has said the government is committed to promoting disable-friendly infrastructure development.

Speaking at a program organized, marking the 32nd International Day of the Persons with Disabilities here today, the Minister pledged to give priority to the construction of disabled-friendly roads, religious sites and other infrastructures.

He stressed that right to self-sufficiency and live a dignified life should be recognized and implemented as the very basic right of the people with disabilities.

As he said, it is the first responsibility of the State to build an atmosphere where people with disabilities could explore self-sufficiency and live a dignified life.

National Federation of the Disabled Nepal, Devidutta Acharya stressed that the three-tier government be positive and proactive towards the improvement of the rights of the disabled. “The Federal, province and local governments should manage budget necessary for the capacity enhancement of persons with disabilities.

Secretary at the Office of Women, Children and Senior Citizens, Suman Raj Aryal, was of the view of endorsing the National Disability Policy soon.

The Ministry is proactive to get the policy that incorporates social, economic and environmental justice for the persons with disabilities soon.

“People with disabilities should be connected to the existing technology to improve their living conditions,” he said.

Social Welfare Council information officer, Sanjay Kumar Mallik, was of the opinion of assimilating the theme of ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the sustainable development goals for, with and by persons with disabilities ,” he brought into action.

On the occasion, various people including Parbati Paudel, Santosh Paudel, Bhabukjung Thapa, Sharmila Bishwakarma, Tikaram Ghimire, Pratima Sharma, Goma Adhikari, Teknath Neupane, Nirmala Devkota and Ishwor Raila were awarded.

December 3 each year is observed at the International Day of the Persons with Disabilities since the proclamation of the United Nations General Assembly in 1992.
