KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is to purchase electricity from India at Rs 38 per unit.
NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising said that electricity was being purchased at high prices to meet the demand of Nepal due to the high price of electricity in the Indian market.
Speaking at a press conference held at NEA on Thursday, Ghising said that Nepal would offer the highest tariff for importing electricity.
Nepal had earlier been buying electricity from the Indian open market at an average rate of Rs 8 per unit.
India’s power plants have not been able to generate enough electricity since Russia invaded Ukraine and prices of petroleum products and coal have risen.
NEA is currently purchasing 350 to 400 MW of electricity from India each day.
Nepal had signed a one-year agreement with NTP Power Trading Corporation Limited to purchase 150 MW of electricity daily and PTC India 75 MW to import electricity from the open market.
Even though the agreement was finalized, Nepal could not get electricity at a fixed price as per the agreement after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
