Supreme Court hearing writ against 14 defecting UML lawmakers today

The writ likely to be in the 'not to be heard' list again

KATHMANDU: A hearing of the writ petition filed at the Supreme Court (SC) demanding to revoke the membership of 14 UML lawmakers will be conducted today.

The hearing of the case is set for today.  A division bench comprising justices Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Ishwor Prasad Khatiwada is scheduled to hear the case today. However, considering the list of the cases assigned to the bench, UML’s writ is less likely to be heard today.

CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli had lodged the petition naming 14 parliamentarians recommended for action from the party, Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota, Election Commission and Speaker of Lumbini Province Purna Gharti as the defendants.

Earlier, the SC had sought the Election Commission’s written response within 15 days on whether the registration process of the CPN (Unified Socialist) was in line with due processes.

On behalf of UML Chairman Oli, Sumitra Pandey had lodged three separate cases against Speaker Sapkota, Election Commission and Lumibini Province Speaker Gharti on September 1.

The petitioner has demanded that a mandamus order be issued to implement the party’s decision in regard to the action taken against 14 UML HoR members.
