Top leaders reaffirm relevance of continuing five-party coalition

KATHMANDU: Reaffirming the need and relevance of the coalition, top leaders of the ruling coalition on Monday decided to continue working together — meaning forming a new government involving the current coalition partners.

Issuing a joint statement on Monday evening, the coalition partners reaffirmed the need and relevance of the current alliance.

Amid speculations that the Maoist Center would forge an alliance with the CPN-UML, a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence agreed to continue the coalition among the five political parties, including Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, Unified Socialist, Janamorcha Nepal and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP).

However, LSP leaders were not present at what has been dubbed as a “crucial” meeting held for the first time after the November 20 general election.

Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, United Socialist Chairman Madhav Nepal, and other leaders attended the meeting.

NC senior leaders Ram Chandra Paudel, Purna Bahadur Khadka, Prakash Sharan Mahat, and senior Vice Chairman of Maoist Center Narayankaji Shrestha, and Durga Paudel from Rastriya Janamorcha also participated in the meeting, a Baluwatar source said.

After the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Nepali Congress leader and Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki read out the statement saying that the election review concluded that there was been a lack of cooperation and misunderstanding between the coalition parties in some constituencies.

“Despite some lapses in some constituencies, the overall impact of the coalition shows that the parties should retain the current alliance in the days ahead,” he said.

According to Minister Karki there was an agreement to properly review and address the shortcomings of the past in the coming days.
