KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is set to start removing electricity poles in Kathmandu after six months.
NEA, which is laying an underground distribution line in Kathmandu, is working to remove the overhead distribution line that has dented the city’s aesthetics.
NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising said that the internet wires will have to go with the removal of the poles.
Speaking at a program in Kathmandu that saw the participation of internet service providers, Nepal Telecommunication Authority and Electricity Authority, Ghising urged internet service providers to start preparations to use the fiber duct placed along the underground power distribution line.
“We are removing electricity poles within upcoming six to nine months,” Ghising said.
He urged all service providers to use the fiber duct laid by NEA along the underground line to provide their service thereafter.
He added further dispute over electricity pole rent would not be appropriate.
Ghising expressed NEA’s willingness to settle the dispute for solutions.
He said that the NEA was now ready to obtain the license of the telecommunication infrastructure company and preparations are being made for that. However, he added that the business of telecommunication service infrastructure is only a very small part for NEA.
“We are working on the facilitation of telecommunication services including our pole, OPGW cable for service. We had increased the rent to reduce the cost of wiring in the city by sharing the infrastructure,” he said. “Now is the time for everyone to share telecommunications infrastructure.”
