‘Programs and policies in upcoming budget should not influence voters’

KATHMANDU: Former Chief Election Commissioners (CECs) have urged the government not to include new programs and policies in the budget that are likely to influence voters.

Issuing a joint statement Thursday, five former CECs requested the caretaker government to be sensitive towards the budget as the government has announced holding mid-term elections on November 12 and 19 later this year.

The five CECs are Surya Prasad Shrestha, Bhojraj Pokhrel, Neelkanth Upreti, Dr. Ayodhya Prasad Yadav and Dolakha Bahadur Gurung.

They stressed that the programs and policies in budget should support free and fair elections, and not otherwise.

They have also expressed confidence that the Election Commission, on its part, would also draw the attention of stakeholders concerned in this regard.
