Contempt case filed against four former Chief Justices

KATHMANDU: A contempt case has been filed in the Supreme Court (SC) against the former Chief Justices who had issued a joint statement against the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

Advocates Dhanjit Basnet and Lochan Bhattarai have filed a contempt case against former Chief Justices Min Bahadur Rayamajhi, Anupraj Sharma, Kalyan Shrestha and Sushila Karki.

Former Chief Justices in a statement had remarked that the dissolution of the House of Representatives was unconstitutional.

The case is scheduled to be heard on January 28.

Saying that the four former CJs have interfered in the administration of independent and fair justice by commenting on the case under consideration in the court, the writ petitioner has demanded maximum punishment against them as per sub-section 4 of section 17 of the Justice Administration Act 2073.

If found guilty of contempt of court, the court may sentence the offender to one-year imprisonment or a fine of up to ten thousand rupees or both or other appropriate orders.

Earlier on Tuesday, contempt of court case was filed at the SC against Prime Minister KP Oli.
