National Frequency Policy to be introduced: Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Parbat Gurung has said that ‘National Frequency Policy’ would be formulated and introduced to address the issues regarding radio frequency in the country.

Speaking in the interaction program organized by the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters Nepal (ACORAB) on its 20th anniversary here today, Minister Gurung viewed, “It’s high time we review and analyze whether the community radios were really fulfilling their responsibilities towards the community.”

Urging the media entrepreneurs not to run the media to serve the political interest, Gurung asserted that the community radio had publicized the political agendas rather than working towards ensuring positive transformation in the society.

“By the look of things, it occurs to me that the community radios are run due to political competition,” opined the Minister, also the spokesperson of the government.

He said, “It is high time we make the community radio more responsible, accountable and transparent.” Minister Gurung also spoke of the need to assess the contents being disseminated by the community radio.

ACORAB was established on this day in 2057 BS. It has 360 community radios as its member all over the country.
Also speaking at the event, parliamentarian Radheshyam Adhikari said that the community radio should be more responsible towards women, Dalit and marginalized communities.

Another parliamentarian Ram Narayan Bidari appealed with the government to formulate community radio-friendly acts and laws.
