Apex court issues show cause order on advertisement

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a show cause order in the name of the government and sought a written response from it relating to the Advertisement Act which asks media to seek approval from the Advertisement Board before publishing advertisements.

A constitutional bench involving Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JBR, and Justices Dipak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Hari Krishna Karki and Ishwor Prasad Khatiwada asked for a written response to this effect within 15 days.

The ruling was in response to the writ petition filed by advocate Ananta Raj Luitel demanding removal of censorship on media advertisements.

The government has formed the Advertisement Board and acted accordingly as per the Advertisement (Regulation) Act, 2020.

Advocates Kirtinath Sharma Poudel, Bikash Bhattarai and Amita Gautam Poudel took part in the pleading.
