BHOJPUR: The government’s annual Sagarmatha Tree Plantation Campaign is underway in Bhojpur, with local authorities planting rhododendron saplings to promote environmental conservation, biodiversity and sustainable tourism.
The nationwide campaign, which runs from June 28 to July 31 each year, is being implemented in Bhojpur by the Division Forest Office. Office Chief Khudrus Miya said the initiative would contribute to environmental protection, climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation.
The campaign was launched at Tiwaribhanjyang in Ward No. 2 of Pauwadungma Rural Municipality. As part of the programme, a rhododendron plantation drive has begun in the Mundum Trekking Trail area, a destination known for its tourism and religious significance.
According to Miya, rhododendron saplings have been planted at Kaluman Gurung Park to enhance greenery, conserve the environment and further promote tourism in the naturally scenic area. Of the 500 saplings provided by the Division Forest Office, 100 have been planted in the first phase.
The remaining saplings will be planted in the Chekhewa area along the Mundum Trekking Trail, which is listed among the government’s 100 tourist destinations. The plantation will be carried out in coordination with Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality.
Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality Chairperson Saroj Basnet stressed that the campaign’s long-term success would depend on the active participation of local communities in protecting and managing the planted saplings.
Nepal has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. The recently concluded Sagarmatha Sambad 2025 also highlighted the growing climate crisis in the Himalayan region and called for greater global action under the theme “Save the Himalayas.”
Chief District Officer Rajan Poudel said tree plantation plays a vital role in environmental protection, climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation, urging all stakeholders to support the campaign, which will continue in Bhojpur until mid-August.
