KATHMANDU: Chinese citizens “stranded” in Nepal due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have demonstrated outside the Chinese Consular Section on Thursday demanding that they be allowed to return to China.

The protesting Chinese nationals have been stuck in Nepal for the past two years since the pandemic, and have protested demanded their immediate return to their home country. The placards they carried in the demonstration read, “We want to return to China.”

The Chinese protestors have complained that they are currently staying in hotels, and are without income and work.

As many as 2,000 Chinese nationals have been stuck in Nepal due to the pandemic.

The protestors rued that they could not return even though they were ready to bear the cost of their return.

Many Nepali students, who returned home on study leave due to the pandemic, have also not been able to return to China to continue their studies.

The recent rise in coronavirus infections in China has led to a lockdown in some Chinese states.

Meanwhile, several Nepali businessmen, too, have not been able to go to China to import goods as China has not allowed people to go to their country citing coronavirus pandemic.

It should be noted that China has also barred several Nepali containers with essential goods in Tatopani and Rasuwagadhi checkpoints from entering Nepal.
