Apex court justice Chudal hears habeas corpus writ, issues show cause order

KATHMANDU: Supreme Court (SC) Justice Kumar Chudal has heard a habeas corpus writ Monday amid boycott by other SC judges demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher Rana.

Justice Chudal’s single bench issued a show cause notice in a writ filed against an order issued by District Court, Rukkum East.

Earlier today, CJ Rana assigned six benches to hear seven cases. Of them, two were single benches while the remaining four were division benches. Another single bench was assigned to SC Justice Bam Kumar Shrestha.

Other SC justices, meanwhile, did not attend the benches assigned to them, saying the chief justice assigned benches to them in violation of an agreement reached between them and the CJ.

Meanwhile, the advocates associated with the Nepal Bar Association announced to launch stringent protests against CJ Rana from today itself. They on Sunday announced to boycott the benches assigned by CJ Rana.

Floating nine reasons why CJ Rana should step down, they warned they would launch stringent protests starting today.

Earlier, Nepal Bar had given an ultimatum to CJ Rana to resign on the moral ground.
