KATHMANDU: The Armed Police Force (APF), Nepal has placed 8,180 personnel on 24-hour standby across the country as part of its monsoon disaster preparedness measures.
Issuing its Mobilization, Preparedness and Response Plan for Disaster Management, the APF said it has strengthened its readiness to respond to potential disasters during the monsoon season.
According to the APF, a total of 21,699 personnel nationwide have already received disaster management refresher training in line with the Monsoon Preparedness and Response National Action Plan-2083 and are on alert for emergency deployment. The force plans to provide refresher training to all APF personnel by mid-Ashar.
To enhance coordination during emergencies, disaster focal persons have been designated at APF offices across the country, while necessary coordination mechanisms have been established with relevant agencies.
In addition, 95 communication-trained APF personnel have been deployed to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the National Emergency Operations Center, Provincial Emergency Operations Centers and District Emergency Operations Centers.
The APF has also identified disaster-prone areas where rescue and relief operations could face delays due to difficult terrain or accessibility challenges. To address this, temporary monsoon bases have been established at 54 locations across the country.
These include six in Koshi Province, 11 in Madhesh Province, 16 in Bagmati Province, four in Gandaki Province, seven in Lumbini Province, two in Karnali Province and eight in Sudurpashchim Province.
Furthermore, disaster management bases have been set up at 16 high-risk locations and equipped with the necessary personnel and resources to ensure rapid response when required.
The APF stated that all units have been instructed to remain on high alert throughout the monsoon season to support rescue, relief and disaster management efforts nationwide.
