Birgunj sees black fungus in eight people, three dead

BIRGUNJ: Birgunj has witnessed the highest number of black fungus, eight till Wednesday.

According to Narayani Hospital sources, out of eight cases of black fungus identified, three patients have already died whereas five are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in India.

Mucormycosis is a very rare infection believed to be caused by exposure to mucor mould which is commonly found in soil, plants, manure, and decaying fruits and vegetables.

According to health experts, the infection of black fungus is often seen in a person infected with coronavirus after 12-20 days of infection.

Although there have been no evidence of human to human transmission in Nepal and India so far, research has shown that it can be transmitted by air and soil.

The doctors say that the black fungus is found in the COVID19 recovered victims who had taken steroids and antibiotics, and oxygen. However, it also is not supported with enough evidence.

What everyone agrees is black fungus is and can be very fatal to anyone, specially the people struggling against or recovered recently from the coronavirus pandemic.
