Call for using Devanagari letters and numbers in ’embossed number plate’

KATHMANDU: A delegation of Nepal Law Professionals, the Bhasa Sahitya Pratisthan (Language and Literature Foundation) and Nepal Democratic Lawyers’ Association, met with Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba today and urged him to use his good offices for using the Devanagiri scripts in the embossed number plates of vehicles.

The deputation is coordinated by the Save Devanagari Script and Letters Campaign.

The delegation also called for an annulment of the concept of keeping the ’embossed number plate’ in vehicles, stating it was brought with the ill-intention of ‘destroying ‘ the written evidence of the Nepali script in favor of the English script.

The delegation comprised of senior advocate Dhruba Lal Shrestha, president of Democratic Lawyers’ association, Yogendra Bahadur Adhikari, spokesperson of Nepal Cultural association, poet Mahesh Prasain and the Campaign coordinator and advocate Rameshwor Raut Matridas, among others.

The deputation also handed over a memorandum to the Nepali Congress president. The memorandum strongly calls for using the Devanagari scripts in the embossed number plates on vehicles to protect language as well as constitutional rights.
On the occasion, President Deuba said his party, the Nepali Congress, was always committed to the protection, preservation, and promotion of the indigenous language and script.
