WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump signed an executive order targeting social media platforms, several days after social platform, Twitter, called two of his tweets ‘potentially misleading.’

Speaking from the Oval Office ahead of signing the order, the US President said the move was aimed at defending free speech from ‘one of the gravest dangers’ it has faced in the country’s history.

US President Trump had earlier said he would introduce a legislation that could scrap or weaken a law that protected social media companies such as Facebook or Twitter, in which has been termed as an ‘extraordinary attempt’ to regulate social media platforms.

The proposed legislation is a part of an executive order that he had signed on Thursday afternoon.

Trump attacked Twitter for tagging his tweets. He wants to change or remove a provision of a law — the section 230 that shields social media companies from liability for posting contents by their users.
