Teacher found dead in Jhapa school quarters; husband missing

KATHMANDU: A female teacher was found dead in the residential quarters of Arunodaya English Boarding School in Kakarbhitta, Mechinagar Municipality-6 of Jhapa on Monday, while her husband remains unaccounted for.

The deceased has been identified as 29-year-old Kavita Kumari Dhungana of Lalbandi Municipality-2, Sarlahi, police said. She had been living with her husband, 30-year-old Ratan Gupta of Birgunj Metropolitan City-16, Parsa, in the school’s residential building. Both had been teaching at the school since mid-April.

According to Jhapa District Police Office spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police Ranjan Awa, an investigation into the incident is underway.

School principal Durga Bahadur Luintel said the school had been closed for vacation since July 21. When classes resumed on Monday, both teachers were absent and could not be reached by phone. Their room was found locked from the outside.

Luintel said Gupta sent him a WhatsApp message at around 4:30 pm, stating that he had found his wife hanging inside the room, moved her body to another room, and left the premises out of fear. He requested the principal to unlock the room and complete the necessary legal procedures.

According to local residents, Gupta was seen leaving the school premises carrying two bags at around 5:00 pm on Sunday. He has remained out of contact since then.

Police said the woman’s body was recovered from the school premises after they received information about the incident. Authorities said the cause of death has not yet been established, and an investigation, including a post-mortem examination, is underway. Police are also searching for Gupta.
