Death toll in Italy surges to 9,134 as 919 die in 24 hrs

KATHMANDU: Italy has recorded 919 new coronavirus deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 9,134 in the European country as of Saturday morning.

According to the latest figures collated by Johns Hopkins University, 86,498 have been infected by the novel virus in Italy of which 10,950 returned home after recovery.

Italy is the worst-hit in Europe. Almost everything has been closed and people told to stay at home.
Earlier on Friday, authorities warned that lockdown was likely to be extended beyond 3 April.

Earlier World Health Organization chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said a “chronic global shortage” of protective equipment was one of the “most urgent threats” to the ability to save lives.

With the deadly virus spreading to 199 countries, it has claimed 27, 324 people so far while 595, 800 people have been infected, of which, 131, 006 have recovered after treatment.
