Devotees throng Shiva temples on third Monday of Shrawan

KATHMANDU: Thousands of devotees are thronging Shiva temples across the country, including the revered Pashupatinath Temple, on the third Monday of the holy month of Shrawan.

Mondays during Shravan hold special religious significance for Hindus, drawing large numbers of worshippers to Shiva temples to offer holy water, belpatra (bael leaves), flowers and prayers in the hope of receiving Lord Shiva’s blessings.

To manage the large influx of pilgrims, the Pashupati Area Development Trust has kept all four gates of the Pashupatinath Temple open. Special arrangements have also been made for devotees participating in the Bol Bam pilgrimage, with four dedicated queues for temple entry.

Besides Pashupatinath, long queues of devotees have been seen at other prominent Shiva temples in the Kathmandu Valley, including Gokarneshwar, Nageshwar, Doleshwar, Koteshwar and Makhan Mahadev, often referred to as the “small Pashupatinath,” in the Basantapur Durbar area.
