NEA to provide 20 percent discount to 3.8 million domestic consumers

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) will be providing a 20 percent discount on electricity tariff for some 3.8 million domestic consumers.

The power authority will be providing a discount of up to 150 units in the bill for the Nepali month of Chaitra (March-April).

A meeting of NEA Board of Directors held under the Chairmanship of Minister for Energy, Water Resource and Irrigation Barshaman Pun on Friday decided to propose it before Cabinet for discount.

Minister Pun said the decision to that end was taken to provide relief to consumers as many have been rendered jobless and economic activities have come to a complete halt due to the weeklong lockdown enforced by the government to combat COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision is aimed at encouraging the use of induction stoves, said Minister Pun.

Saying that an immediate shift from cooking gas cylinders to induction was not possible, Minister Pun remarked that its initiation can be taken from urban cities like Kathmandu.

NEA will incur a loss of Rs 500 million through the implementation of the decision.
