Jajarkot supplies maize to various cities

JAJARKOT: The maize produced in Jajarkot district has been supplied to various districts in the recent time. With the access to road network, the district has been able to export the local produce.

Chief of Agriculture Section at Bheri Municipality in the district, Yagya Adhikari, informed that the maize of deuti species produced in different parts of Jajarkot district was being supplied to various cities across the country.

More than 300 quintals of maize is supplied annually from Bheri Municipality alone. The maize is sold Rs 100 per pathi (four kgs).

The agriculture section has been working for more than three years to produce the maize seed and make farmers self-reliant on it. The efforts benefited the farmers well, thereby making them able to export the corn.

The maize seed is produced in 10 hectares of lands at Rupakot and Chaurtol of Bheri Municipality every year. With this, the compulsion to bring in maize seeds has ended, the farmers said.

Even the efforts are underway to set up a maize storage centre to avoid insects. The locals are still demanding further road access, Adhikari said, adding that labeling, packaging and grading of maize has begun at Rupakot.

Similarly, Raghunath of Nalgadh Municipality-5 in the district has been promoted as pocket area of maize. Chief of Agriculture Section at the municipality, Balkrishna Acharya, shared this information.

Nalgadh Municipality alone exports 700 quintals of maize every year. Lanha, Halchaur and Dandagaon in the municipality are producing the maize. Bheri and Nalgadh Municipalities are regarded as fertile land for it.
