Death toll in Delhi violence rises to 20



NEW DELHI: The death toll because of the ongoing violence in northeast Delhi has climbed to 20, Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital in Shahdara said on Wednesday.

Authorities said four bodies were brought to the hospital on Wednesday morning, taking the death toll to 17.

Over 150 others sustained injuries over a period of two days after clashes broke out between pro-and anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters in North-East Delhi, Indian media reported.

Minutes later, the GTB Hospital said that the death toll rose to 20. On Tuesday, the death toll was 13, Indian media reports said.

According to Medical Superintendent Sunil Kumar, 50% of the injured have sustained bullet injuries.

Delhi Police head constable Ratan Lal is one of those killed in the violence.

Tension fumed in Delhi as streets in localities such as Bhajanpura, Chand Bagh, Maujpur, Gokulpuri, Kardampuri and Jaffrabad saw battles between the members of two groups.

They also hurled stones, petrol bombs and opened fire.
