What is a lockdown?

KATHMANDU: A lockdown, in general, refers to an emergency situation when it is considered safe to be inside the house or a certain area.

In such a situation, people are prevented to leave their houses, the area or move around freely.

The protocol can only be initiated by the authorities.

Lockdowns are mainly imposed for safety reasons — an active threat to people’s lives has been one of the most likely reasons.

What cannot be done?

Lockdown prevents the free movement of people or vehicles.

People are generally prohibited from coming out of their houses or areas, except for some specific authorized activities, which include the purchase of food, pharmaceutical products, going to health centers, financial institutions, or such activities.

Shops and retail outlets will be closed, except for basic need products, pharmacies, and medical services.

Museums, theaters, libraries, futsal, gatherings, parties, shows, sports, with any type of public event or festival or will be suspended.

All services will be suspended for a certain period of time.
