No Constitution amendment to serve vested interest of a person: Sharma

KATHMANDU: Main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has asserted that the Constitution should not be amended  to merely serve the vested interest of a single person.

Posting a twitter message, NC spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma stated that the Constitution should not be amended without the national-level consultation just to fulfill the vested interest of a person.

Sharma objected to the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) after it formed a three-member task-force led by Madhav Kumar Nepal on Sunday to suggest the Constitution amendment so that it would pave the way for  a National Assembly member to become the prime minister.

“Madhes demanded an amendment to the Constitution. It was rejected.  Ingeniousness nationalities, Dalit and Tharu communities demanded an amendment to the Constitution. The demand was rejected,” Sharma twitted, ridiculing the NCP’s move to amend the Constitution to serve the vested interest of a single person.

According to party sources, the pressure to amend the constitution came from party Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam that would pave the way for him to become the Prime Minister.

The NCP is all set to appoint Gautam as a National Assembly (NA) member.

It should be noted that the term of 19 NA members is expiring next week.

While 18 of them will be replaced by the newly-elected members, one member will be appointed by the President in the recommendation of the cabinet.
