President Bhandari’s advisor Pyakurel resigns

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s advisor on political, social and human rights issues, Sushil Pyakurel has tendered his resignation to the President on Friday.

Amidst the controversial decision the government has been making on various issues related to human rights, Pyakurel, former commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission and the founder of Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) Nepal has decided to quit the advisory role at the President’s Office.

It is said that a human rights activist for more than 3 decades, Pyakurel was against the government’s role at nominating Agni Sapkota, one of the alleged of many murders during the Maoist conflict in Nepal, for the post of the Speaker of House of Representatives.

Issuing a press release, Pyakurel said he felt he has to offer more of his time to human rights and social justice movement rather than being confined to a formal role he had been executing so far.

He has thanked the President and President’s office for the cooperation and added, “During my tenure here, I found the Head of the State committed to democracy, human rights and social justice.”

Pyakurel was appointed as an expert to offer his advice to the president on political, social, and human rights issues on Mar. 23, 2018.
