KATHMANDU: The Martyrs’ Week celebrations have kicked off in Hetauda, the capital of Bagmati state from Friday.
Chief Minister Dormani Poudel inaugurated the celebrations amidst a program at local Buddha Chowk today.
A rally was organised from Buddha Chowk to Martyrs’ Memorial Pillar as part of the celebrations. CM Poudel, National Assembly (NA) members, House of Representatives’ members and State Assembly members were present on the occasion.
Nepal Police personnel, Armed Police Force personnel and locals also joined the rally. Bagmati state government and Martyrs’ Memorial Development Committee Hetauda earlier decided to observe the Martyr’s Week commencing from today.
Marathon, oratory competition, several cultural programmes and literary gathering will be organised as part of the celebration.
Martyr’s Day is observed on the 16th of Magh every year in Nepal in commemorations of martyrs Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dashrath Chand and Ganga Lal Shrestha who had been executed by the Rana rulers at different dates in the month of Magh in 1997 BS for rebelling against the autocratic Rana oligarchy.
