Govt’s remark on Nepal-China border issue came in haste: NC

KATHMANDU: The major opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC), has said that its attention has been drawn towards the comment made public by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the recent Nepal-China border issues.

NC has asserted that the government made its opinion public hastily stating that ‘China did not encroach Nepal’s border’ before the study team formed to make an on-site visit to the area in Humla district to determine whether the China side had encroached Nepal’s territory and whether China had built structures in Nepal’s soil completed its work.

Issuing a press statement, NC’s spokesperson Bishwaprakash Sharma here today, said that it was not judicious for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to make public its opinion before the team formed to look into the matter had returned back to the district headquarters and reached a conclusion.

NC has viewed that the government should have considered the right timing to make the statement after the study team had presented its conclusion on this matter.

The study team had found Pillar No 11 demarcating Nepal and China on Wednesday while it was due to determine whether the structures made by China was inside or outside of the Pillar No 12, according to the press statement.

According to Spokesperson Sharma, NC’s central member and Karnali State Parliamentary Party’s leader Jeevan Bahadur Shahi was also a part of the study team and was still in Humla. The team was making an objective study and doing a reality check.

Sharma said that it would be a responsible and mature way for the government to make its statement public on serious issues such as border acknowledging the study and findings of the local administration, political parties and media.

“We as the opposition party would like to alert and aware the government to articulate its disagreement with the Chinese government if the study team concludes of the Chinese side encroaching border area in Nepal. We would also like to aware the government to reach the resolution to the border issues with China through diplomatic channel if any,” reads the statement.
