Landslides and floods disrupt highways across the country

KATHMANDU: Continuous rainfall, landslides, flooding, and road erosion have disrupted vehicular movement on several major highways and road sections across the country.

In a traffic update issued tis morning, Nepal Police said that some roads have been completely blocked, while nighttime vehicle operations have been suspended on a number of vulnerable sections.

As a precaution against possible flooding, all types of vehicles have been prohibited from operating between 6:00 pm and 4:00 am on the Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunjebesi section of the BP Highway connecting Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli.

Similarly, vehicle movement has been banned from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am on the Kanti Lokpath. Traffic has come to a complete halt on the Mechi Highway at Ilam Municipality-9 after rainfall turned the road muddy.

The Araniko Highway has also been completely blocked following landslides in the Jirokilo and Kodari areas of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality in Sindhupalchok.

In Dolakha, the Lamosanghu–Ramechhap road section at Kirnetar in Tamakoshi Rural Municipality-5 has been cut off after the Sunkoshi River eroded part of the road.

Likewise, the Pasang Lhamu Highway at Khalte in Uttargaya Rural Municipality-5 of Rasuwa has been completely blocked after erosion caused by the Trishuli River.

Police also said that the Larke–Benighat unpaved road in Gorkha has been completely obstructed after a landslide occurred at Underdanda in Dharche Rural Municipality-3.

Authorities have urged travelers to check the latest road conditions with the concerned agencies before starting their journey and to take necessary precautions, warning that the risk of landslides, floods, and road damage remains high during the ongoing monsoon season.
