Bagmati corridor: Rs 10 bln spent; only 50% work completed

KATHMANDU: The construction work of Bagmati corridor project is not likely to be completed on time.

The project which began a decade ago has already absorbed Rs 10 billion while only 50 percent of the work has been completed so far.

The corridor construction project on the banks of nine rivers including the Bagamati River had started in 2066 BS. It was originally planned to complete the project by 2080. An estimated budget for the project is Rs 15 billion.

Unfortunately, only 50 percent of the work has been completed. The remaining 50 percent of the project is unlikely to be completed in the remaining four years.

Of the six rivers, where the corridor construction work is underway currently, 90 percent work has been completed in three rivers and 30 percent of the work in the other three rivers.

The construction work for three rivers is yet to begin.

According to High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilization, the construction work on Bagmati, Bishnumati and Dhobikhola is at the final phase.

Hanumante, Balkhu and Nakhkhu rivers have witnessed only 30 percent of corridor construction work.

The construction work for Manahara, Karmanasha, and Mahadeva has not started yet, said the Committee.
