KATHMANDU: The Prison Management Department has initiated homework to release over 5,000 jailbirds due to concerns over the coronavirus infection.

This has also aimed at avoiding congestion inside the prisons.

The Department has also decided to bar visitors from meeting inmates in different prisons in the country due to concerns over the coronavirus infection.

A spokesperson at the Department Devarshi Sapkota said that the decision to this effect has been made until further notice to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Sapkota informed that they have corresponded with all 72 prisons across the country in this regard.

All prison managements have been asked to ensure essential daily supplies.

The Department has also instructed all jail authorities to adopt preventive measures such as maintaining distance with the inmates, barring visitors from meeting the jailbirds, washing hands with soap regularly, and using masks and sanitizers, among others.
