KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has called on the government to establish an independent judicial inquiry into the incidents in Sunsari and other parts of the country, arguing that the existing investigation mechanism is inadequate.
A meeting of the party’s parliamentary party held at Singha Durbar on Monday concluded that the probe committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs would not be sufficient to uncover the truth behind the incidents.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Nepali Congress General Secretary Pradeep Paudel said the party had urged the government to conduct an impartial investigation, make the findings public, and take legal action against those found responsible.
Paudel said the party would strongly raise its demand for a judicial inquiry committee in both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly. He added that the Congress would also seek support from other political parties on the issue.
The parliamentary party meeting also decided to assign lawmakers to different districts to strengthen direct coordination with the public.
In addition, lawmakers have been instructed to submit proposals for appointing personal secretaries based on defined criteria.
The meeting further decided to organize an orientation program for members of the House of Representatives on August 8 and 9.
