Pakistan coronavirus camp lacks facilities, humanity

KATHMANDU: The isolation camp set up in the town of Taftan in Baluchistan province, Pakistan to contain COVID-19 is far below the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to The Guardian, the quarantine camp bordering with Iran has no real housing, just five people to a ragged tent which lacks bathrooms and towels.

The stench of sweat, rubbish and human excrement hung in the air around the camp which looks terribly dusty and squalid, the report said.

Pakistan government had kept around 6,000 people at the quarantine camp at one stage, which was supposed to function as a sanitary quarantine location, preventing the spread of the coronavirus from Iran, which has had one of the worst outbreaks globally.

On the contrary, according to Mohammed Bakir, who was held there for two weeks, it was no more than “a prison … the dirtiest place I have ever stayed in my life”.

Describing the appalling condition of the camp, Bakir said everything was in disarray without any facilities and the people undergoing quarantine were treated like animals.

More than 1,000 people are currently facing appalling conditions in a coronavirus quarantine camp on the Pakistan-Iran border.
