7 ministers resign en masse

Term House dissolution "unconstitutional and undemocratic"

KATHMANDU: Ministers in the Prime Minister KP Oli-led government have resigned en masse protesting the government’s decision of dissolving the House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday.

Minister for Education Giriraj Mani Pokhrel, Minister for Energy Barshaman Pun, Agriculture Minister Ghanashyam Bhusal, Tourism Minister Yogesh Bhattarai, Minister for Forests Shakti Basnet, Minister for Water Supply Bina Magar and Minister for Labor Rameshwar Ray Yadav have tendered their resignation on Sunday afternoon.

“We have resigned from our respective posts as we considered the government’s decision unconstitutional, undemocratic and against the people’s mandate,” a joint statement signed by the ministers said.

“It is a well-known fact that we tried our best to avert this situation,” the statement said.

They have announced their resignation through a press conference at Singha Durbar.

Minister for Industry Lekha Raj Bhatta and Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, who earlier belonged to erstwhile Maoist party, did not resign.

Earlier, Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Executive Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal had instructed the ministers close to them to resign after Prime Minister Oli recommended the dissolution of the House of Representatives.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari has already dissolved the HoR.
