KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal on Sunday extended the lockdown period till June 2 as the country continues to witness an increase in the number of coronavirus cases.

The decision comes as the country recorded a total of 295 confirmed coronavirus cases Sunday and two deaths — one on Friday and the other on Sunday.

The decision to extend the nationwide lockdown has been taken during a meeting of the Cabinet held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar today after the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Nepal increased to 295 with two deaths.

The High-Level Coordination Committee for Prevention and Control of COVID-19 had earlier on Sunday recommended the government to extend the lockdown by another 10 days with stricter rules.

Nepal has been under lockdown since March 24.

The cabinet has also instructed the concerned authorities to ensure proper management of the quarantine facilities set up at different local levels.

The cabinet meeting has also directed the local levels to add quarantine centers prior to bringing back the Nepali migrant workers stranded in different places of India.

All government services and businesses, other than essentials, have been shut down. Domestic and international flights have been suspended.

According to the cabinet decision, the country was not in a position to lift the prolonged lockdown yet.

Nepal has 295 COVID-19 cases so far with two deaths.
