Cabinet meeting today; lockdown likely to be extended

KATHMANDU: The government is likely to extend the nationwide lockdown in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

A meeting of the cabinet scheduled to be held at 5 pm at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Baluwatar is likely to make a formal decision in this connection.

The high-level coordination committee on the prevention and containment of COVID-19 has already recommended the government on extending the lockdown and change the modality of the prolonged lockdown.

The current lockdown enforced by the government is ending on Monday.

The government had first enforced the lockdown on March 24 for a week after the second coronavirus case was reported in Nepal.

The first lockdown had been extended until March 31, the second one was extended until April 7, the third until April 15, the fourth until April 27, the fifth one until May 7, and the sixth extension is expiring on May 18.

Nepal has 291 COVID-19 cases so far with one death.
