JANAKPURDHAM: The Province-2 Assembly on Tuesday failed to name the province after all the proposals couldn’t garner a two-thirds majority votes needed for endorsement.
It was expected that the province will decide to name it ‘Madesh Pradesh’ through a secret ballot.
The name ‘Madesh Pradesh’ was proposed by Samajwadi Party and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal. But, the proposal received only 60 votes.
A total of 72 votes were required to finalize the name of the Province.
Earlier, failing to make a unanimous decision on the name of the Province-2, lawmakers of the Provincial Assembly had decided to finalize the name through voting.
The lawmakers rejected the name ‘Janaki’ proposed by Nepal Communist Party (NCP), ‘Mithila-Bhojpura’ proposed by Nepali Congress (NC), and “Madhya-Madesh” proposed by some lawmakers.
While NCP garnered only 32 votes, NC got only 28 votes. Likewise, lawmakers proposing ‘Madhya-Madesh’ received 42 votes, which was 30 less than the required votes.
Prior to this, the Provincial Assembly members had put views and opinions in this regard on their own terms.
Provincial lawmakers were allotted a 5-minute time to express their views before the polls.
The Samajbadi Party has 30 lawmakers, NCP 32, RJPN 25, NC 19 and Nepal Sanghiya Samajbadi has one member in the Province 2 Assembly.
