KATHMANDU: The Indian government has shut down the iconic monument Taj Mahal to tackle the spread of the coronavirus.

The “monument of love” visited by thousands in a single day has been shut down amid coronavirus fears, said India’s Culture Ministry.

The Taj Mahal is one of the world’s leading tourist attractions and draws as many as 70,000 people every day.

All the 143 monuments and museums including the Taj Mahal will remain shut until 31 March, Indian media reports have said.

India has 114 reported cases of Covid-19 and three related deaths.
