KATHMANDU: Nepal’s ambassador to India, Nilambar Acharya, has expressed the optimism that a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit will happen in the future.

He said that the SAARC is alive. Ambassador Acharya’s statement comes a day after SAARC video conferencing was held to chalk out a strategy to combat the coronavirus crisis, according to ANI, India’s news agency.

According to ANI, Acharya said it was a great example of dealing with collective problems adding that the SAARC member states should combine their resources and exchange their best practices to fight coronavirus.

Acharya said that the holding of the SAARC video conference itself indicates that SAARC is alive and there will be a summit in the future.

SAARC leaders on Sunday evening held a video conference to chalk out a strategy to deal with the COVID-19 crisis.

The Summit of the regional body has not taken place since 2014 in Kathmandu.

The 19th summit was to happen in Islamabad in 2016. However, it could not take place owing to the terror attacks in Uri of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ambassador Acharya also reacted to a Pakistan representative bringing up the issue of Kashmir at the SAARC video conference saying that the SAARC states should focus on coronavirus now.
