Case settlements up at Supreme Court

KATHMANDU: The settlement of cases at Supreme Court (SC) has increased of late. It cleared 1,566 more cases in the last fiscal year in comparison to the previous fiscal year.

In a press release issued Friday, Chief Registrar Nripadhwaj Niraula said that the SC had settled 9,193 cases in the previous fiscal year while 10,759 in last year. He added that 10,759 cases out of 23,952 were settled in the last fiscal
year.

Niraula added that the High Courts cleared 90.33 percent cases while the District Courts settled only 58.37 per cent cases last year.

Among 10,753 cases registered during the lockdown, 2,415 were settled so far.

The SC also monitored high courts and district courts in the lockdown time. He also said they were planning to arrange the hearing of the cases via video conferencing in the wake of COVID-19 lockdown resulting in inconvenience to people’s movement.

The use of technology is adopted abroad and found effective to settle the cases at such hour so it might be effective here as well, he observed.

According to him, 525 cases are however pending for five years in apex court.
