NC demands govt to take diplomatic initiative on Lipu Lekh issue

KATHMANDU: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has called on the government to take a high-level diplomatic initiative on road construction by India encroaching Nepal’s land.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NC President Deuba said that issuing a statement will not be enough on the issue of nationality.

“As the government has not commenced a high-level diplomatic initiative and has only issued statements on serious issues, as the chairperson of the Nepali Congress and leader of the main opposition party, I publicly appeal to the government to take high-level diplomatic and political initiatives,” Deuba said in a statement.

Deuba said that his party has been expressing dissent on the issue since India and China reached an agreement on Lipu Lekh during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China in May 2015.

Deuba has also mentioned in his statement that the then government led by late Sushil Koirala had sent a “protest note” to the governments of both the countries regarding the agreement reached between China and India on Lipu Lekh.

Similarly, Deuba also reminded that his party had reacted strongly after India included Nepali territory including Lipu Lekh, Limiyadhura and Kalapani in its political map.
