Amended MCC compact will not be acceptable to America: Randy Berry



KATHMANDU: American Ambassador to Nepal Randy Berry has said that amended agreement on the grant under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) will not be acceptable.

Speaking at the Rotary International conference held in Pokhara, Berry said if the MCC grant agreement were amended and endorsed by the parliament, it would not be acceptable to America.

A Central Committee meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) on February 2 had formed a task-force to study about MCC grant compact after the leaders were divided over it.

The task-force comprising former Prime Minister and NCP senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal, Bhim Rawal and Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali is studying the provisions laid down in the MCC grant compact.

America will provide Nepal US $500 million under the MCC grant compact for the infrastructure development of electricity and roads. The MCC compact which requires to be spent in five years must be endorsed by the federal parliament.
