Trump re-imposes tariffs on raw Canadian aluminum

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has re-imposed 10 percent tariffs on Canadian aluminum products to what he said “protect US industry from a surge” in imports.

This has angered Ottawa and some US business groups, Reuters said.

Canada, meanwhile, said it would retaliation as tensions have heightened between the two countries weeks after a continental trade deal between the US, Canada and Mexico came into effect.

Trump said in a speech that he signed a proclamation reimposing the “Section 232” national security tariffs.

According to him, the step was “absolutely necessary to defend our aluminum industry.”

Some prominent business groups have criticized the decision as counterproductive and unhelpful to the US interests.
