China alleged for meddling in internal affairs of Nepal, Sri Lanka

KATHMANDU: Lisa Curtis, Senior Director for South and Central Asia, US National Security Council has alleged China for meddling in internal affairs of Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Lisa made this remark at a webinar at the Brookings Institution, assessing China’s increasing regional influence and strategy over neighboring countries, particularly Nepal and Sri Lanka.

She said that China has disregarded the sovereignty of Nepal and Bhutan.

It should be noted that in May, a Chinese state-run media had claimed that Mt Everest actually belonged to China.

Likewise, China also asserted a new territorial claim in eastern Bhutan earlier this month, according to her.

She added that China’s influence has grown in India’s neighbors, particularly Nepal and in Sri Lanka.

Responding to a query, she said China is not only using its economic clout in these countries but also getting involved in their internal politics.
