‘Tuins’ to be replaced by suspension bridges in Bagmati Province

HETAUDA: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Development of Bagmati Province Rameshwor Phuyal has said the province government is committed to replace old cable crossings (known locally as ‘tuins’) with suspension bridges in the state.

Tuin is a risky means of transportation used extensively in remote areas of Nepal wherein people cross rivers and cliffs with the use of ropes, pulley and containers.

Many people have lost their lives when the ropes snapped while using wire crossings.

The replacement work would be done in the current fiscal year, 2020/21, he said.

“In this regard, the Ministry has mobilized a technical team to districts and the report is yet to come. Necessary works will initiated once the report comes,” he said.

Similarly, thatched house roofs at 16 rural municipalities in 10 districts in the province except the Kathmandu Valley would be replaced with corrugated zinc sheet, he said.

Informing that repair of 24 traditional canals in eight districts has started, the minister said budget has been released to the respective offices for the construction of approximately 100 new bridges in 13 districts and the construction work was ongoing.

“Under the Province Infrastructure Development Program, Rs 30 million has been released through a Province Assembly member of the respective constituency. Bidding has been announced for the construction of Posta Bahadur Bogati Bhimphedi-Kulekhani tunnel way linking Hetauda, the province capital and Kathmandu, the federal capital of the country,” he said.

The project has four-year completion target with the joint investment of the federal and province governments.
