KATHMANDU: The cases related to drugs trafficking have gone up across the country. According to the information provided by Police Headquarters, the cases related to drugs trafficking have increased in the fiscal 2075/76 BS as compared to the previous year.
The fiscal year 2074/75 had witnessed total 3,088 cases while it was 3,357 in the year 2075/76. Bisworaj Pokharel, Nepal Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police, said the incidents of drugs abuse and trafficking have exposed with the rise in police crackdown. “The drugs peddling has been carried out from Terai area due to open border”, he added.
Nepal Police had established drugs control bureau to effectively work to control drugs abuse and trafficking cases. As of now the bureau has arrested and lodged cases against 2,518 people, including 96 foreigners since its establishment in 2069 BS, shared DSP Gautam Thapa.
Recently Nepal has seen the increment of drugs abusers by 11 percent and the Ministry of Home Affairs has devised several programs to reduce the rate.
Drugs such as marijuana and opium are being massively produced in mountainous and interior Madhes, Thapa said, urging the local people’s activism to reduce its production.
