Nepali restaurant wins annual NYC ‘Momo Crawl’

NEW YORK: Nepali Bhanccha Ghar, a Nepali restaurant in Jackson Heights, Queens, was declared the winner of New York City’s annual Momo Crawl for the third consecutive year in a row.

More than 500 customers tasted the restaurant’s momo — a type of Himalayan dumpling — on Sunday, Sept. 15, as part of the annual festival, which aims to showcase “entrepreneurship, community, and culture from the Tibetan, Nepalese, and other South-Asian communities that call Jackson Heights home,” according to the event’s organizers.

At the end of the day, participants voted Nepali Bhanccha Ghar, located on 37th Road between 74th and 75th streets, as the winner, beating out dozens of others for the title of best momo.

“We have been making food as per customers’ taste and I would like to thank everyone who made us a winner,” said Yamuna Shrestha, owner of the restaurant. “We are glad that not only Nepalis and Tibetans love our momos, but others like it, too.”

Shrestha, 51, who hails from the western part of Nepal, started the restaurant in 2015. The eatery serves different varieties of momo — chicken, beef, goat, pork, paneer, and vegetarian.

Shrestha has also started another restaurant in Jackson Heights.

“Besides food, we are trying to start folk musical nights during weekends there,” she said.
