Indian govt withdraws special security cover from ex-PM Singh

NEW DELHI: The Indian government has withdrawn the Special Protection Group (SPG) from former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s security cover, media reported on Monday.

The SPG security cover is generally provided to guard the Indian prime minister, former prime ministers and their immediate family members. Singh will now enjoy the second-best security cover, Z-plus, added the media reports.

“The current security cover review is a periodical and professional exercise based on threat perception that is purely based on a professional assessment by the security agencies.

Manmohan Singh continues to have Z-plus security cover,” media quoted the Ministry of Home Affairs as saying. Singh was India’s prime minister for two consecutive terms before Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over in 2014.
